September is National Sewing month, and in honor of it Melanie of Violet's Buds has put together an easy tutorial on how to hand sew a posey flower and she offered to guest post this tutorial on Daft! These flowers can be used as hair accessories, lapel pins, to adorn bags, or make a bunch for a never-wilting flower arrangement!
Start out with enough fabric to cut out 6 circles of equal size. I used 3" circles, but any size would work.
Start by folding your first circle in half, as shown below.
Next, make a running stitch all around the rounded edge. I like to count the number of stitches so that I can repeat them on the next petal, but its not required.
Once you have sewn around the edge, pull the string tight which will make a petal shape.
Repeat this process until you have 5 petals.
Now that you have all 5 petals, pull the string taut, and stitch the flower closed.
The next step is to create the center of the flower, making a yo-yo. Starting with the wrong side of the fabric up, make a running stitch around the entire circle.
As you get back around to the beginning, start pulling the string tight.
Now you have a yo-yo circle, stitch through the center and knot the string on the back.
Now, take the finished yo-yo circle and poke the center through the hole in the flower. Shown below is the back of the posey with the center of the yo-yo poking through.
When you turn around the flower, it should look similar to this. You can secure the center by stitching it in place, or by gluing it. If you are creating a hair accessory, glue an alligator clip on a felt pad to the back at this time.
For a slightly different look, like the one below, you would use 5 circles of equal size and 1 circle of an inch smaller diameter. Here I used 5 circles 3" diameter, and 1 circle of 2" diameter. The center yo-yo rests on top of the flower petals rather than poking out of the flower.
Which version of the posey do you like best? Not interested in making your own posey? You can purchase a ready made posey, or have one custom made for you, in our Etsy or Storenvy shops!
