Owner Amy is 29 and has been working for herself since she was 21 years old! She started out selling clothing through a mail order retail catalog for alternative/goth clothing. In 2005, she started making synthetic dreads and opened a brick and mortar location selling goth clothing and accessories. Unfortunately, after five successful years Amy had to close her shop due to a fall in the local economy.

Amy decided to carry on, as she really loved to be self employed, and opened shop on the popular handmade selling site Etsy to sell her synthetic dreads and punk accessories and jewelry. Her shop also has edgy knit wear created by her mum.

All of Amy's dreads are made from a synthetic hair called "kanekalon" that comes in a wide range of colors and can be blended together to create unique shades. To create the dreads, Amy back combs the hair much like you would with regular dreading, then she either steams them while they are twisted, or she crochets the dreads to give them a more natural style, which is her favorite style to make. The dreads can either be braided into your own hair, or made into falls that you simply tie around your own pig tails or pony tail. A full set of dreads usually have about 50-80 dreads per set, which can be pretty time consuming to make.

There is a large synthetic hair/synthetic dreadlocks community of sellers within the handmade community. Amy says everyone's work is different, though the process may be the same or similar for each, and those differences make each seller unique. Her experience with other seller's of similar products has always been positive, supportive and friendly.

To see more photos of Amy's work, visit her Facebook page or her Etsy shop. Feel free to hit her up via Twitter with any questions you may have about her dreads or placing a custom order!

Love that, so true!! We all have our own method of making things and it was all through trial and error and finding our niche.
