reed diffuser tutorial

Today's guest post is brought to you by Alicia from Shop Zeeuh

Have you ever thrown away a pretty glass bottle and thought, "I wish I knew a DIY project to reuse that..." {Or is it just me??} Every time we finish a bottle of liquor I think that. {Like the Disaronno bottle} Well look no further, I have the solution! a Homemade Reed Diffuser.

{And for the non alcohol drinkers, You could use your empty olive oil bottles Or an empty perfume bottle!}

First, soak your bottle in hot water with a little bit of dish soap. Let it soak for a good while. I think I let mine soak for an hour. I left it, and attended to other chores. This soaking will help take off all the labels. If it still has a little bit of the sticky stuff left on the bottle, Don't fret. Use some rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover on a cloth and wipe the bottle down.

Then, I went to the craft store and got a thing of jute to wrap around the bottle

Like my ruler?? :) I must be a sewer. ;) I evenly measured out where the top and bottom should be of the jute wrap. I used a dry erase marker so it can easily wipe away when done. Also the dots help me determine where the back of the bottle will be. This is where I will start and stop the jute.

Get out that trusty hot glue gone! On the beginning of the jute rope, I glued the end to curve upwards. That way when we wrap the rest around it will cover the raw edge.

Get to wrapping! Be sure to use some glue too!

At the end, I tucked the raw edge under the other strands. Secure with glue. And trimmed the edge.

So we end up looking like this! I think it looks good to leave it like this even! But I had to add a lil something extra. I was thinking of tying a gem, pendant or even an antique key. But I never found anything that I liked. So instead I went through my fabric scraps and made a flower. Click here for No Sew Flower instructions
We are almost done with the Reed Diffuser! For all you Scentsy fans {Or my mom and her 'The Body Shop'} I am sure you have some oil lying around Me, I went to Walmart and found a lil bottle for $0.98!!!

Next all you need to do is fill your bottle! For my size bottle I used about 1 cup of water. A few dabs of the oil. And a shot of vodka. Yes, vodka! The alcohol helps prevent the water from evaporating.

Then, I used some wooden skewers. {Years ago we made shish-kabobs and never used the skewers again} You could also use wooden chop sticks. {Who's getting Chinese take out tonight?} Whatever your wooden stick of choice is, Put the sticks into the oil mix. Let the sticks soak for a bit. Then flip them over. The wet sticks is what will help emit the oil scent.

And that's it!! I hope you try it!

  2. love it! I admit... I had no idea what a reed diffuser was when I saw the link but I remembered your tweet with an image earlier this week so I was hopeful that it would have something to do with this project! Score! Super cute idea!

    1. Yeah, I agree. I didn't know what they were called either. I had to google the name ;) I just know that the stores charge WAY TOO much for these!! So I decided what a frugal, cute & eco way to make our own ;) ;)
